Great Wall of China

The Longest man-made structure in the world the Great wall of China Stretches for 2400Km(1500mi).Built to be a barrier against nomadic raids the wall was constructed by Shihuangdi (Shih-huang-ti),the first emperor (221-  210) of china.It is made of earth,stone,and brick.
This fortification runs along the northern and northwestern frontier of china,running from Qinhuangdao on the gulf of Bo Hai on the east to the vicinity of Gaotai (Kao-t'ai),Gansu (Kansu) Province,On the west,with an inner wall running southward from the vicinity of Beijing almost to Handan (Han-tan).It is from 4.6 to 9.1m (15 to 30ft) thick at the base and tapers to come 3.7 m (12ft) at the top.the height averages 7.6m(25ft).Watchtowers about 12m (40ft)in height are placed at intervals of approximately 180m.The wall was neglected for centuries until the Chinese Communists restored three sections of it as an attraction for visitors,including this section near Beijing,the Capital of China.
