Altamira cave


Altamira cave in Altamira,Spain is famous for its magnificent prehistoric    paintings and engravings.The cave is 270m(890ft) long.The archaeological remains of Aurignacian(perigodian),upper Solutrean,and lower or middle Magdalenian periods were found.The roof of great lateral chamber is covered with paintings,chief of bison,executed in a magnificent,vivid polychrome of red,black and violet tones.The other noteworthy attraction are eight engraved anthropomorphic figures,various handprints,hand outlines and numerous black painted or engraved figures.It is situated 30km (19mi) west of Santander, in northern Spain.It was discovered by a hunter in 1868 but it was only in 1875 that Marcelino de Sautuola, a nobleman from Santander discovered animal bones,flint implements there and paintings of bison on the ceiling.On announcing to the world about his grand discovery Sautuola found only inacceptance. his discovery was accepted only in the first decade of the 20th century.
